Key points

  • Anthropic reportedly takes over OnePWR's Caterpillar orders
  • Piper Sandler lists a $3.4 billion OnePWR sale
  • What Anthropic's IPO filing says about gas power

Anthropic agreed to pay about $3.4 billion to take over orders for gas-fired generators with 1.7 gigawatts of capacity, the Financial Times reported on November 8. The deal also included engineering and construction work needed to install them.

San Antonio equipment supplier OnePWR Solutions had ordered the generators from Caterpillar (CAT) about two years ago. Anthropic took over the orders in late September but didn't buy OnePWR, and none of its employees moved to Anthropic, according to the report.

Anthropic and OnePWR didn't respond to requests for comment, and Reuters could not immediately verify the report, CNBC said.

Is there anything on paper besides the FT report?

There is, and it's a banker's deal page. Piper Sandler lists a $3.4 billion transaction for OnePWR Solutions, under the name CK Holdings Group, LLC, dated September 2026. The bank says it "served as exclusive financial advisor for OnePwr on its sale of its power generation platform to a frontier AI lab."

The page doesn't name the lab, and it doesn't mention Caterpillar. The amount and the timing match the FT's account, but the identity of the buyer and the details of the orders come from the FT alone.

Why would an AI lab buy someone else's generator orders?

Because this equipment is hard to get, and Anthropic told investors so. In the amended IPO filing it made on November 2, Anthropic said equipment "such as high-voltage transformers, switchgear, turbines, generators, substations, and transmission components, has been subject to extended delivery timelines, price increases, tariffs and national security requirements, and allocation constraints."

The reports we read don't say why Anthropic did this particular deal. Taking over an existing order could give Anthropic access to equipment sooner than placing a new one. OnePWR had needed money to finish the purchase, the FT reported.

Divide the reported $3.4 billion by 1.7 gigawatts of generator capacity, and the deal comes to about $2 billion per gigawatt. The deal also covered engineering and construction work, so that figure is not an equipment price, and neither the FT nor Piper Sandler says how the total splits between the two.

Where does gas power fit in Anthropic's plans?

The same filing says that "certain of our planned data center facilities rely on dedicated on-site natural gas-fired generation." In other words, some sites plan to generate electricity on-site.

That comes with a bill attached. Anthropic says its arrangements "generally provide for fuel and related costs to be borne by us on a pass-through basis without cost caps." Under those arrangements, higher natural gas costs would generally be passed on to Anthropic. The reports we read don't say which sites the OnePWR generators will serve.

How big is $3.4 billion for Anthropic?

The deal is a fraction of Anthropic's disclosed commitments. The November 2 filing puts Anthropic's commitments at about $895.4 billion as of and after September 30, substantially all of it for compute and infrastructure. Our AI compute commitments tracker lists the signed contracts behind that figure, from Google and Broadcom to Riot Platforms and TeraWulf.

The filing doesn't name OnePWR or list generator purchases separately, so we can't tell whether the $3.4 billion sits inside the $895.4 billion. The FT described the deal as the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI lab.

What isn't known yet?

A few things. Neither Anthropic nor OnePWR has confirmed the deal on the record. We don't know where the generators will go, when they'll be delivered, or how Caterpillar's order book changed when the orders changed hands.

Anthropic's IPO price range is still blank. We follow each filing on our Anthropic IPO valuation tracker, and the next amendment could say more about power.

Frequently asked questions

What did Anthropic buy from OnePWR?

Anthropic took over OnePWR Solutions' orders for 1.7 gigawatts of Caterpillar gas-fired generators, plus the engineering and construction work to install them, for about $3.4 billion, the Financial Times reported on November 8, 2026. Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR.

Has the deal been confirmed?

Not on the record. Anthropic and OnePWR did not comment. Piper Sandler's deal page lists a $3.4 billion sale of OnePWR's power generation platform to an unnamed frontier AI lab, dated September 2026.

Why would Anthropic take over generator orders?

The reports do not say why. Anthropic's November 2, 2026 amended IPO filing says turbines, generators, transformers, and similar equipment face extended delivery timelines and allocation constraints, and that some of its planned data centers rely on on-site natural gas-fired generation.

Who pays for the natural gas?

Generally Anthropic. Its filing says its arrangements generally provide for fuel and related costs to be passed through to Anthropic without cost caps.

Is the deal part of Anthropic's $895.4 billion in commitments?

It is unclear. The filing puts commitments at about $895.4 billion as of and after September 30, 2026, but does not name OnePWR or list generator purchases separately.
