  • Uber expands ChatGPT Work to 30,000-plus employees
  • GPT-6.1 Sol will be the default in Uber's rollout
  • Uber's rollout follows September job cuts

Uber (UBER) is expanding OpenAI's ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-person pilot to more than 30,000 employees, OpenAI said Thursday. The AI agent connects to employees' Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Slack to prepare meeting briefs, build presentations, and analyze data.

Uber shares were up 2.1% at $69.07 as of 4 p.m. ET Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6%.

The rollout is Uber's first company-wide deployment of an AI agent for office work. ChatGPT Work runs inside ChatGPT Enterprise and can stay with a project for hours, according to OpenAI, which introduced it on July 9.

Uber will use GPT-6.1 Sol, released September 29, as the default model. OpenAI said the choice balances "frontier performance and cost efficiency." Software engineers will continue using Codex, OpenAI's coding agent.

Teams including operations, finance, marketing, and product will receive training, approved app connections, and an internal library of AI skills.

"As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber's future," said Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber's chief technology officer.

Neither company disclosed what Uber is paying or shared any results from the 1,000-person pilot. They said they plan to share insights into adoption, use cases, and measurable outcomes as the rollout continues.

Uber cut about 10% of its jobs in September

The rollout follows Uber's largest job cuts since the pandemic. On September 2, Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi told employees the company would eliminate about 3,300 roles, about 10% of its workforce, including a 20% cut in management positions. Uber had about 34,000 employees at the end of 2025. The company said it would put the savings into growth, including autonomous rides.

Thursday's announcement does not mention the job cuts. Eight days after announcing them, Khosrowshahi bought about $10 million of Uber stock on the open market.
