Microsoft (MSFT) is testing Kimi K3 for Copilot, the same model that dragged Micron (MU) and Intel (INTC) down more than 13% last week

Microsoft (MSFT) is testing Kimi K3 for Copilot, the same model that dragged Micron (MU) and Intel (INTC) down more than 13% last week

Key points

  • Microsoft is testing Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 for Azure and Copilot, evaluating whether it can replace features that currently run on OpenAI and Anthropic systems, according to a report from The Information.
  • The move could cut Microsoft's AI inference costs by as much as $600 million. Microsoft has run the same kind of evaluation on DeepSeek and earlier Kimi models before, without switching.
  • Kimi K3's July 17 launch dragged chip stocks through a rough week. Using our own market data: Micron (MU) and Intel (INTC) each fell more than 13% for the week, AMD dropped 11.1%, and Nvidia (NVDA) slid 3.9%.
  • Moonshot AI is separately seeking shareholder approval for a Hong Kong IPO within six months, in a funding round that could value it above $30 billion, up from $20 billion in May and roughly $4 billion last December.
  • Microsoft's own stock actually gained about 2% that week despite a Friday dip, and most chip names were clawing back some of Friday's losses in Monday trading.

The same week Kimi K3 sent chip stocks into one of their roughest stretches in months, Microsoft (MSFT) started testing whether it could run its own AI products on the very same model. According to a report from The Information, Microsoft engineers are evaluating Kimi K3 for Azure and Copilot, checking whether the Chinese model can power features that currently run on OpenAI and Anthropic systems. If it works, Microsoft could cut its AI inference bill by as much as $600 million.

Microsoft is shopping around, and Kimi K3 isn't the first stop

This isn't Microsoft's first look at a cheaper alternative. The company has previously tested DeepSeek's models and earlier versions of Kimi for Copilot, part of what looks like a deliberate strategy: spread workloads across a mix of models instead of defaulting to one provider for everything. None of that means Kimi K3 is going into production. Engineers still have to clear it on response quality, reliability, safety, and latency before it touches a live product, the same bar every candidate model has to clear.

The arithmetic explains the interest. Kimi K3 prices output tokens at $15 per million, about a third of what Anthropic's Fable 5 charges for the same tier. At Microsoft's scale, even a partial shift toward a model priced that far below its current defaults adds up fast, which is presumably where the $600 million estimate comes from.

The irony: this is the model that just rattled the chip trade

As we covered when Kimi K3 launched on July 17, the model's size (2.8 trillion parameters, the largest open-weight release yet) and its price reopened the same argument that DeepSeek triggered in January 2025: if a Chinese lab can get near-frontier performance for a fraction of the cost, why does the market need to keep paying up for Nvidia GPUs at the current pace? The semiconductor index ended Friday 20% below its June record, a bear market by the standard definition. Individual names told the same story. Using our own market data for the week of July 13 to July 17: Micron (MU) fell 13.3%, Intel (INTC) fell 13.5%, AMD dropped 11.1%, Qualcomm (QCOM) fell 9.2%, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) lost 8.2%, Broadcom (AVGO) gave up 7.3%, and Nvidia (NVDA) slid 3.9%. Microsoft, notably, did not follow the group down. MSFT actually gained about 2% on the week, even after a 1.8% dip on the Friday Kimi K3 launched.

By Monday afternoon, the worst of the panic looked like it was cooling. AMD was up 2.5% from Friday's close, Intel up 2.8%, Broadcom up 2.2%, Micron up 1.8%, Microsoft up 2.0%, and Taiwan Semiconductor up 0.9%. Nvidia was roughly flat, and Qualcomm dipped slightly. That's a partial bounce, not a reversal of the week's damage, but it's a long way from a market that's still in panic.

Moonshot's other headline this week: a $30 billion IPO push

Moonshot AI, Kimi's Beijing-based developer, has a lot riding on that demand holding up. The company is circulating a shareholder resolution seeking approval to prepare a Hong Kong listing within six months, according to The Information. People close to the talks say a private funding round now underway could value Moonshot above $30 billion, up from $20 billion in a Meituan-led round in May and roughly $4 billion as recently as December. That May round came alongside another structural move: Moonshot has been unwinding its offshore VIE structure since the spring, restructuring into a mainland-anchored entity after Chinese securities regulators toughened their stance on the arrangement and began pushing listing candidates to justify keeping it.

The demand side of that story checks out, at least by Moonshot's own numbers. Its annual recurring revenue reportedly grew from $200 million in April to $300 million in June, and it briefly paused new Kimi subscriptions over the weekend after demand outran its GPU capacity. Those figures are self-reported and won't be independently verified until a Hong Kong prospectus, if the listing happens, discloses margins, burn rate, and customer retention.

Alibaba's stake just got a lot more interesting

Alibaba (BABA) owns about 36% of Moonshot, a stake we wrote about earlier today, worth roughly $800 million invested at a valuation of roughly $2.2 billion at the time, based on the SEC filing's own numbers. If Moonshot's next round really does land above $30 billion, that stake's paper value has grown more than tenfold since the original check.

The bigger picture

Microsoft testing a Chinese model to shave $600 million off its own AI spending is a strange companion story to a week that started with investors worried Chinese AI models were bad for American chip demand. It's also a reminder that Microsoft's AI costs are a live issue on their own terms, not just a China story: the company is one of the backers propping up OpenAI's roughly trillion-dollar infrastructure commitments, and every dollar it can shave off inference costs elsewhere helps that math. Whether Kimi K3 ever actually runs a Copilot feature is still an open question. That Microsoft is willing to test it at all is the more interesting fact.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft actually going to use Kimi K3 in Copilot?

Not yet. Microsoft engineers are evaluating Kimi K3 against the same bar every candidate model has to clear: response quality, reliability, safety, and latency. The Information reports the tests could eventually cut Microsoft's AI inference costs by as much as $600 million, but testing does not mean deployment, and Microsoft has previously evaluated DeepSeek and older Kimi versions the same way without switching.

Why is Kimi K3 cheaper for Microsoft to run than other models?

Kimi K3 prices output tokens at $15 per million, about a third of the $50 Anthropic charges for the same tier on Fable 5. At Microsoft's scale, shifting even part of its workload to a model priced that far below its current defaults adds up to real savings.

How much did chip stocks fall the week Kimi K3 launched?

Using our own market data for the week of July 13-17, 2026: Micron and Intel each fell more than 13%, AMD dropped 11.1%, Qualcomm fell 9.2%, Taiwan Semiconductor lost 8.2%, and Nvidia slid 3.9%. Microsoft's own stock gained about 2% over the same week.

Is Moonshot AI, Kimi's parent company, going public?

It's seeking shareholder approval to prepare a Hong Kong IPO within six months, according to The Information. A funding round now underway could value the company above $30 billion, up from $20 billion in May and roughly $4 billion last December, a more than tenfold jump since Alibaba first invested at a valuation of roughly $2.2 billion, based on the SEC filing's own numbers.

How much of Moonshot does Alibaba own?

About 36%, per Alibaba's own SEC filing, which states it invested approximately $800 million for that stake during the year ended March 31, 2024. That works out to a valuation of roughly $2.2 billion at the time, based on the filing's own numbers.
