Hedge fund Millennium disclosed a new 5.2% stake in Ameresco (AMRC) the week the stock hit its lowest point of 2026

Hedge fund Millennium disclosed a new 5.2% stake in Ameresco (AMRC) the week the stock hit its lowest point of 2026

Key points

  • Millennium Management disclosed a new 5.2% stake in Ameresco (AMRC), 1,816,169 shares worth about $42.5 million at Wednesday's close.
  • It's Millennium's first 13G on file for Ameresco, filed July 22 with an event date of July 17.
  • That week the stock closed at its lowest level of 2026, after a Q1 guidance cut and a broader clean-energy selloff tied to federal tax credit phase-outs.
  • Ameresco develops renewable energy and efficiency projects, and is also building a still-early, behind-the-meter power business for data centers with partner CyrusOne.

We track Millennium Management's ownership filings the way you'd watch a very active trader's account: most of what shows up is noise, one team inside a huge multi-strategy fund nudging a small position around. Then occasionally a filing lands somewhere interesting, and this week's is one of those. Millennium just disclosed a fresh Schedule 13G showing it crossed 5% ownership of Ameresco (AMRC), a clean-energy developer, the same week the stock closed at its cheapest of the year.

What the filing actually says

The document lists three names, as Millennium's filings always do: the management company itself, its parent entity Millennium Group Management, and founder Israel A. Englander. Together they report a stake of 1,816,169 shares (5.2% of the class, roughly $42.5 million at Wednesday's $23.39 close), with an event date of July 17. EDGAR has no earlier 13G or 13G/A from Millennium on Ameresco. This looks like a freshly built position.

A 13G reports where an owner stood on one date, the day they crossed 5%. Price and timing aren't part of that report. Ameresco was trading near its 2026 low on July 17, a real overlap, though not evidence of when Millennium actually started buying.

Why the passive label matters

Millennium checked the box for Rule 13d-1(c), the passive-investor rule for owners certifying they won't push for board seats or a sale. The mechanics of how that differs from an activist 13D are covered in a separate piece.

Millennium runs money through dozens of independent trading teams sharing one balance sheet, each with its own book and its own risk budget. A 5% stake almost always traces back to a single team's conviction. Someone inside one of the largest hedge funds in the world decided Ameresco was worth owning at these prices. Izzy Englander himself almost certainly never looked at the trade.

Why the stock got this cheap

Ameresco peaked near $36 in late May, then slid. Q1 2026, reported May 4: revenue came in at $401.5 million, up about 14% year over year, a beat, paired with a roughly 4.5% cut to full-year adjusted EPS guidance and EBITDA guidance below what Wall Street wanted. Baird cut its price target from $44 to $36 that same day. Clean-energy stocks kept sliding into June and July as federal tax credits for wind and solar projects worked through a scheduled statutory phase-out, a deadline crunch pressuring the whole sector, not just Ameresco. The stock closed the week of July 13 at $22.46, its lowest weekly close of the year, then recovered slightly into Millennium's filing.

What Ameresco does

Ameresco works like a contractor, not a utility. It gets hired to design and build an energy system, and often ends up owning it too. The work ranges from efficiency retrofits in older buildings to Energy Savings Performance Contracts with government agencies. Renewable generation is a separate, growing piece of the business, mostly solar and wind. There's also landfill gas, old-dump methane burned for power rather than vented into the air.

2024 revenue hit a company record at $1.77 billion. The backlog kept climbing too: $5.3 billion in Q1 2026, with the nearer-term "awarded" slice up 20% to $2.8 billion.

The data center angle

The newest piece of Ameresco's business connects to a story we cover constantly: AI data centers stuck behind multi-year utility interconnection queues. Co-president Nicole Bulgarino, who also runs the company's Federal Solutions unit, has been building a behind-the-meter power business aimed at exactly those developers. On Ameresco's Q1 call, she described a still-developing partnership with data center REIT CyrusOne and a deliberately selective approach to the market. "We are approaching this market with discipline, focusing on larger, experienced developers and projects where Ameresco's behind-the-meter capabilities can provide clear value," she said.

Vistra and Constellation Energy both get bid up on this same demand story. So does GE Vernova, the equipment maker selling turbines into it. Vistra's fleet leans heavily on natural gas, with some coal and nuclear mixed in. Constellation is nearly 90% carbon-free, but that's almost entirely nuclear generation, not solar or wind. Neither is a clean-energy play the way Ameresco is. The real link to Ameresco is a shared problem: data centers need more power than the grid can deliver on a normal timeline. Ameresco's management has said plainly that its own data center work is still early, folded into a broader energy infrastructure segment rather than broken out as its own line item. Call it a real option on the theme. It hasn't become a proven earner yet.

What we're watching

A large, sophisticated fund crossed 5% ownership of a beaten-down clean-energy company in the same week that company hit its cheapest price of the year. That's the whole of it. Why Millennium bought, when in that window the buying actually happened, whether the team is betting on the core efficiency business, the data center optionality, or just a stock it thinks got too cheap: none of that is in the filing. Before treating a single 13G as its own trading signal, read our piece on copying hedge fund disclosures. Ameresco's own filings are tracked on our AMRC filings page.

Frequently asked questions

How big is Millennium's new stake in Ameresco (AMRC)?

Millennium Management disclosed 1,816,169 shares, 5.2% of the class, in a Schedule 13G filed July 22, 2026 with an event date of July 17. At Wednesday's close of $23.39, that stake is worth about $42.5 million.

Does the 13G filing say when Millennium bought Ameresco stock?

No. A Schedule 13G reports the position as of the date the 5% ownership threshold was crossed. Purchase dates and prices for individual shares are simply absent from the form, which is built for passive disclosure rather than transaction reporting.

Why has Ameresco stock fallen in 2026?

Ameresco fell after Q1 2026 results in early May, when management cut full-year adjusted EPS guidance by about 4.5% despite beating on revenue. Clean-energy stocks broadly stayed under pressure through June and July as federal clean-electricity tax credits phased out under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, pushing project developers toward hard construction deadlines. The stock hit $22.46 the week of July 13, its lowest weekly close of 2026.

What does Ameresco do?

Ameresco is a cleantech integrator and renewable energy developer, not a pure-play generator. It designs, builds, owns and operates energy efficiency retrofits and renewable generation projects, solar, wind and landfill gas, for governments, utilities, universities and commercial clients. It posted record 2024 revenue of $1.77 billion and had a $5.3 billion project backlog as of Q1 2026.

Does Ameresco have a data center business?

Yes, a still-early one. Co-president Nicole Bulgarino leads Ameresco's push into behind-the-meter power for data centers, including a partnership with data center REIT CyrusOne. Management has said the segment is not yet a material contributor to revenue and is folded into the company's broader energy infrastructure segment.
