Key points
- OpenAI's ad business reached a $1 billion annualized run rate about 200 days after launch, with ads now in 40+ countries.
- Ads run on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers, which cover most of its 1 billion weekly users.
- For scale, Google (GOOGL) booked $294.7 billion in ad revenue in 2025, about $1 billion every 30 hours.
OpenAI's advertising business has passed $1 billion in annualized revenue, the company said Monday, roughly 200 days after it started showing ads, per CNBC. ChatGPT Ads are now available in more than 40 countries, and self-service buying opened up across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on Monday.
The ramp has been steep. OpenAI started testing ads in the US in February, and the pilot passed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks. Two hundred days in, it is 10 times that.
Ads appear on ChatGPT's Free tier and on Go, the low-cost plan OpenAI has been pushing in India. Those two tiers represent the overwhelming majority of ChatGPT's 1 billion weekly active users. According to OpenAI, advertisers cannot see private conversations, and advertising has no effect on ChatGPT's responses. The company says its next phase will introduce additional formats, objectives, purchasing choices and measurement tools, along with what it describes as more native ways for companies to engage with ChatGPT users.
How big is $1 billion in the ad market?
In the broader market, it is small. Alphabet (GOOGL) reported $294.7 billion in advertising revenue for 2025, equal to roughly $1 billion every 30 hours. Meta (META) did $196 billion for the year. OpenAI's entire ad business, annualized, is what those two collect in about 18 hours, combined.
The reason it still matters is the other number. A billion weekly users is distribution on the scale of the platforms themselves, and OpenAI built the ad machine on top of it in under a year, not a decade. Ad revenue also changes the shape of OpenAI's business: it stacks on top of subscriptions, enterprise deals and API usage that already had the company on pace for more than $40 billion in annualized revenue as of mid-August, at a reported $852 billion valuation.
Every dollar a brand spends testing ChatGPT placements is a dollar that was probably budgeted for search or social. That is the line Microsoft (MSFT) investors can read either way, since Microsoft is both OpenAI's largest outside investor and the owner of an ad-supported search engine of its own.
The self-serve expansion also lands four days after OpenAI opened its India push, the market where it is courting its next few hundred million users ahead of a reported 2027 IPO. We covered how quickly OpenAI moves when revenue is on the line when it cut off Cursor after the SpaceX acquisition.
Alphabet reports third-quarter earnings in late October. By then, OpenAI's run rate will be a different number.
