SpaceX's 911 million share unlock landed today. The stock rose, and the rest of the space trade rallied harder.

SpaceX's 911 million share unlock landed today. The stock rose, and the rest of the space trade rallied harder.

Key points

  • SpaceX's 911.5 million share unlock landed today, more than doubling the public float. The stock was up about 1.6% just after noon ET.
  • Goldman Sachs, Citi and Deutsche Bank all initiated SpaceX (SPCX) at buy this summer, and Raymond James carries the Street's highest target at $800.
  • 14 of the 15 other space and satellite stocks tracked here are higher today. Redwire (RDW) is up 10%, BlackSky (BKSY) more than 10%.
  • Rocket Lab (RKLB) won a $397 million Space Force contract Tuesday, and Voyager Technologies (VOYG) raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $275 million to $305 million.

Today, Aug. 6, up to 911.5 million shares of SpaceX (SPCX) became eligible to trade, more than doubling a public float that stood around 646 million shares and putting about $101 billion of stock into the hands of employees, executives and early investors who can now sell it. The stock held up. It's up about 1.6% as of just after noon ET, trading near $110.01 against Wednesday's close of $108.27.

Wednesday's close was the ugly part. SpaceX beat every estimate in its first quarter as a public company Tuesday night, closed up 9.4% at $125.33, then gave the whole move back and then some. We covered that reversal as it happened. SpaceX is still down about 45% from its June 16 close of $201.80, and down more than 12% from Tuesday's post-earnings high, even after today's bounce.

Where the fear went

Wall Street had largely expected the stock to sell off today. Gary Black of Future Fund said as much Wednesday, as the stock bounced into the close: "This makes no sense with 911.5M new SPCX shares potentially entering SPCX's float tomorrow, which will double its size," he wrote, as reported by Benzinga.

The options market took the other side. Institutional traders piled into Friday-expiring $111 calls Wednesday, and the premium on that contract nearly tripled, from about $2.40 to $6.55, betting the stock would absorb the new supply fast instead of getting buried by it. Dan Ives called the moment a "capex tug of war," and argued SpaceX's spending is a "necessary buildout" rather than a warning sign.

Part of why the selling isn't landing all at once: the unlock is staggered through December, not a single Thursday flood, and a second, larger tranche of 455.8 million shares stays locked because SPCX never closed at the $175.50 trigger price it needed. Elon Musk's own shares, along with a group of other insiders, stay locked until the middle of 2027. The bigger float cuts one way in the stock's favor too: TD Securities puts SpaceX's weight in the Nasdaq 100 above 3.5% after the index rebalances in September, up from under 1% when it was added, which means index funds now have to buy more of it, not less.

Wall Street keeps saying buy

None of this has slowed the rating desk down. Goldman Sachs initiated SpaceX at buy with a $205 target. Citi came in at buy, $200. Deutsche Bank landed at buy, $255. That's on top of Morgan Stanley's Overweight and $300 target. The consensus across 24 analysts is Buy, with an average target of $223.

Raymond James is the outlier, and it's a big one: a Strong Buy with an $800 target, the highest on the Street by a wide margin, built on analyst Brian Gesuale's model of SpaceX clearing $5 trillion in annual sales within a decade. Other outlets have pointed to that call as a sign of how far sentiment has run rather than a sober estimate. Even without it, the range still runs from a low near $62 up to that $223 average, which shows the Street doesn't agree on much beyond the direction.

The rest of the group has its own reasons

This wasn't a SpaceX-shaped day for the rest of the sector. Of the 15 other space and satellite names tracked here, 14 are higher as of just after noon ET, and almost none of the moves trace back to the unlock.

Redwire (RDW) leads the group, up 10%, after this week's earnings: record revenue of $117.1 million against a Street estimate near $107 million, a record 27.8% gross margin, and a record $542.1 million contracted backlog. Voyager Technologies (VOYG) is up almost 7% after what CEO Dylan Taylor called "a defining quarter, record revenue, record bookings and record backlog," alongside a guidance raise to $275 million to $305 million for 2026, up from $230 million to $255 million, and the acquisition of lunar lander company Astrobotic.

AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), up 1.9%, put three next-generation BlueBird satellites into orbit Wednesday, its largest arrays yet, built for peak speeds near 200 Mbps to an ordinary smartphone, close to double what its first five satellites could manage. Rocket Lab (RKLB), up 3.2%, is riding a $397 million Space Force contract awarded Tuesday to build "Flatellites" for airborne threat tracking, its second Space Force award in two weeks after the $266 million suborbital launch deal we covered in July, and the new contract names Rocket Lab's still-unflown Neutron rocket as the launch vehicle.

The rest of the group moved with less of a story behind it, but moved all the same: BlackSky (BKSY) up 10.5%, Intuitive Machines (LUNR) up 6%, Viasat (VSAT) up 5.7%, Spire Global (SPIR) up 4%, Firefly Aerospace (FLY) up 3.6%, Planet Labs (PL) up 3%, Karman Holdings (KRMN) up 1.3%, Iridium (IRDM) up 1.1%, Virgin Galactic (SPCE) up 0.9%, and KULR Technology (KULR) up 0.4%. The one name sitting flat is Globalstar (GSAT), essentially unchanged on the day.

Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile both report earnings after the close on Aug. 10, the next real test of whether this week's gains hold. The unlock itself isn't finished either. Smaller tranches of SpaceX shares keep releasing through October, with a full backstop expiring Dec. 8.

This is general market commentary and opinion, not investment advice. Markets can go down as well as up, and you can lose money. Always do your own research and consider speaking with a licensed financial professional before making any investment decision.

Frequently asked questions

Did SpaceX's stock crash after its 911 million share unlock?

No. SpaceX (SPCX) traded up about 1.6% as of midday Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, even as up to 911.5 million shares became eligible for sale, more than doubling its public float of about 646 million shares. The stock remains down about 45% from its June 16 close of $201.80.

Why are space stocks rallying today if it's not about SpaceX?

Most of the move came from company-specific news. Redwire (RDW) reported record quarterly revenue and backlog, Voyager Technologies (VOYG) raised its 2026 guidance, AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) launched three next-generation satellites, and Rocket Lab (RKLB) won a $397 million Space Force contract, all within the same week.

What price targets do analysts have on SpaceX (SPCX) stock?

Wall Street's consensus is Buy across 24 analysts, with an average target of $223. Recent buy ratings include Goldman Sachs at $205, Citi at $200, Deutsche Bank at $255 and Morgan Stanley at $300. Raymond James carries the Street-high target at $800, a call other outlets have flagged as an outlier rather than a base case.

How many SpaceX shares unlocked on August 6, 2026, and what's left?

Up to 911.5 million shares became eligible to trade, against a public float of about 646 million. A second, larger tranche of 455.8 million shares stays locked because SpaceX never closed at the $175.50 trigger price it needed, and smaller tranches continue releasing through a final backstop on Dec. 8, 2026.
