Key points
- Where Anthropic's first Japan data center would go
- What the $6.3 billion covers
- How the site could get its power
NTT Data Group is in the final stages of talks to build Anthropic's first dedicated data center in Japan, a site in Osaka Prefecture that could cost up to 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion) to construct, Nikkei Asia reported. The two companies aim to sign an agreement by the end of March 2027, with part of the site running as early as 2028.
The facility would have up to 500 megawatts of power intake, which would make it one of the largest data centers in Japan. NTT Data and Anthropic declined to comment to Nikkei.
The $6.3 billion covers construction only
The 1 trillion yen estimate is for building the facility. Filling it with large numbers of AI servers that run on graphics processors would push the total investment to several trillion yen, according to the report.
Securing power will be a challenge. Getting 500 megawatts from utilities through the grid would take time, so the project will first look at other options, including on-site generation and fuel cells.
NTT Data is a top data center operator
NTT Data, a subsidiary of Japanese telecom group NTT (9432), is the world's third-largest data center operator by market share, according to the report. It runs facilities with more than 1,600 megawatts of combined capacity in several countries. NTT took NTT Data private in 2025, so NTT Data's shares no longer trade. NTT shares closed up 0.2% in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Anthropic is considering new data centers in several Asian countries, according to the report. In July, Australian media reported that Anthropic could spend $15 billion to lock up 1.4 gigawatts of data center capacity in Australia. In August, Anthropic was reported to be leasing an Nscale data center in West Virginia for $45 billion.
