Key points

  • Army selects Navitas to develop 10 kV power chips
  • Shares jump after the Monday close
  • Funding and development timeline remain undisclosed

Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS) said Monday that the U.S. Army selected it to develop a domestic manufacturing process for 10 kV silicon carbide power chips. Shares rose 15.2% in after-hours trading to $13.51 as of 6:30 p.m. ET, from their $11.73 regular-session close.

The company announced the selection at 4:15 p.m. ET, saying it followed a competitive evaluation of U.S. silicon carbide companies. Navitas did not disclose a contract value, funding amount, development schedule, or manufacturing partner.

What Navitas will develop

The prototype project will develop and validate a process for making 10 kV silicon carbide insulated-gate bipolar transistors, or IGBTs, which act as power switches, and related PiN diodes. Navitas says the manufacturing process is not currently available domestically. The components are intended for high-power electronics in defense and critical infrastructure.

The program is called ALATTIS, short for Accelerated, Large-Area, 10 kV SiC IGBT. It is sponsored by the Army Research Laboratory, part of the Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM), with support from the Joint Experimentation and Technology Accelerator (JETX).

Navitas's existing GeneSiC product line spans 650 V to 6.5 kV and uses what the company describes as a U.S.-anchored supply chain. The proposed 10 kV IGBTs would extend beyond that range.

The company has built 10 to 15 kV devices before: its release lists PiN diodes at that range in 2012, along with a 6.5 kV thyristor in 2010 and commercial 6.5 kV MOSFETs in 2021.

How the stock moved

Navitas closed Monday at $11.73, down 3.9% from Friday's $12.20. The stock traded near $11.70 until the release. It then closed the 4:15 to 4:20 p.m. five-minute interval at $14.29, according to Yahoo Finance data. Its highest price of the session so far, $14.86, came in the 4:25 to 4:30 p.m. interval, and it was at $13.51 at 6:30 p.m.
